NOTES

1 The addition of the Congo brought the Afro-Asian bloc to 47 UN members out of a total of 100.

2 There have been many name changes since. The country itself, after becoming Zaire, is now back to Congo, officially, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, but also known as Congo-Kinshasa after the name of its capital city, previously known as Leopoldville. This former Belgian colony should not be confused with the neighboring Congo Republic—officially Republic of the Congo—or Congo-Brazzaville, the former French colony. Name changes are indicated selectively, not exhaustively, in the chapter.

3 Andrew W. Cordier served in an interim capacity in that position from August 27 to September 6, 1960. He is the UN official who closed the Congo’s major airports on September 5 and the Leopoldville radio station on September 6.
